Thesis Title: Talking like a man: Identity, socialization, biology and the gendered voice among female-to-male transsexuals

Kira Hall

About

I am currently engaged in my dissertation research, which is a sociophonetic ethnography that tracks the vocal changes experienced by a group of female-to-male transsexuals as they transition from a female gender role to a male one. My goal is to better understand the relationship between biology, socialization, and matters of identity and personal agency when it comes to gendered phonetic styles. I am also interested in the linguistic practices of trans and queer speakers broadly speaking.
