Thesis Title: Paleobiology and paleoecology of hesperornithforms (Aves) from the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway of North America

Karen Chin

About

My research focuses on the paleoecology and paleobiology of extinct vertebrates - primarily Mesozoic vertebrates.  I am currently using bone histology in extinct and modern birds to look for environmental and behavioral signals in bone growth.  Specifically, I am using Late Cretaceous North American hesperornithiform birds for the extinct taxa, and penguins, auks, ducks and geese for modern comparisons.  Past research includes paleoecological reconstruction using microvertebrate accumulations in the Hell Creek Formation of Eastern Montana.  I have also enjoyed doing fieldwork through the American West as well as in the Canadian Arctic.
